Britain needs real change now
Keith Bessant, who stood as the Green Parties candidate in the last General Election, is hoping to significantly improve his vote. He said: "People are disillusioned with the three main parties. Britain needs real change now on the pressing issues that face our society such as climate change and the power of big business. Other parties fail to challenge the way our society is run for a minority, thus leading to an apathetic and disempowered electorate. We need a politics and economics that puts people first and delivers real quality of life."
Keith Bessant has lived in Cheltenham all his life, went to Cheltenham Grammar School and studied at the University of Gloucestershire. He works as a Health Care Assistant and is training to be a nurse with theUniversity of West of England. He has been active in green issues for many years and is a member of the local Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace and the Cycle Campaign. He also runs a campaign locally against urban 4x4s which received coverage in the local press.
Keith Bessant said: “The Green Party received over a million votes in the European Elections and every single green vote sends a message that the business as usual politics of Westminster is no longer good enough. Voters are fed up with the pantomime politics of Westminster; our planet is burning now. We must take action now. None of the other parties will tell the truth and take the steps necessary."
Major campaign themes
Keith Bessant said: "Green politics and economics puts people first and delivers real quality of life. Our major campaign themes headline three key areas where action is needed now:
"Climate Change is happening now. Blair is fooling no one by promising action while voting to increase the carbon emissions allowed for industry and not even mentioning it in his 6 pledges. We must stop plans to treble the aviation industry within 20 years and the £30BN roadbuilding programme. This could then be invested in sustainable transport and renewable energies.
"We must stop selling public services. Rail services must be back into public ownership, no more Foundation Hospitals and no more PFIs that are such poor value for money. What people want is a good service in their local hospital, free at the point of delivery, proper funding for public services, no tuition fees and no top up fees
"Tony Blair took this country to war on a lie. This is no longer in doubt. No WMDs were ever found and the dodgy dossier was another piece of Downing Street fiction. Millions of us demonstrated across the UK to tell Blair, but he believed he was “doing the right thing”. 100,000 Iraqis dead. There can be no justification that the means justified the end."
