As the weather forecasters are preparing to do battle with the bookies over whether or not there will be a white Christmas this year, the Gloucestershire Green party have called for action to save our White Christmas.
Martin Whiteside, a Green District councillor and Parliamentary
spokesperson said: "With Christmas just around the corner, the Green
Party is staking a claim as the only political party that really cares
about saving the traditional white Christmas. All the other political
parties have paid lip service to global warming but have done nothing
to adjust their policies to the seriousness of the threat. After
promising to put climate change at the heart of his programme Tony
Blair has decided that targets do not matter just like his friend
President Bush."
Cllr Whiteside pointed out that scientists predict that global
temperatures may rise by over 5 degrees centigrade in the next 50 years
if nothing is done to halt carbon emissions. He said: "The exact
effects of global warming are not known but all indications indicate
they will be disastrous. It could be that Santa and his reindeers will
find it very difficult to get the sleigh out of the stables in Lapland
if this continues. The runners could be stuck in the mud and it will be
unlikely that he'll get presents to all our children. The Green Party
is often portrayed as peopled by killjoys, but this shows that the real
killjoys are those who do nothing about global warming and will destroy
our traditional Christmas." |
