JUNE 2005:CAINSCROSS BY-ELECTION Print E-mail

17th June 2005

Helen Royall, the only local candidate for Cainscross, Ebley, Cashes Green, Dudbridge and Lower Westrip.

RESULTS: A very disappointing turn-out with only 28.9% of the electorate. Labour won with 652 votes (43%), Tories 425, Lib Dems 257 and Helen with 169 (11%).

Helen Royall, has lived in Ebley for 15 years, and is the only candidate who lives in the parish. She is already on the Parish Council and is the Chair of the Cainscross Parish Plan action group which is working with the community to prepare a plan for the areas' future.

Helen Royall said: "I've lived in Ebley for over 15 years, work locally and am already active in our local community. I believe that if I am given the opportunity to serve on the the District Council I will be able to ensure the interests of this area are heard. Good work has already been done here but there is much more needed."

Helen Royall continued: "Many have spoken of the need for a community centre. It is time we drew up the plans on how to give our Parish such a heart, that helps us build on the strengths of our community. I know too from supporting the excellent youth work in Cashes Green, that it would be good to rekindle something similar in Cainscross (above photo of make-shift skate board park on wasteland in Dudbridge road). We also need safer roads in our residential areas; many of them could be 20 mph zones to reduce the dangers to our children and the rest of us."

Helen Royall said: "I am a member of the Canal co-ordinating committee and want to ensure developments there help our Parish. I also want to see our local brook with no raw sewage and less flooding. From my involvement with the Cashes Green Hospital site group I want to ensure any development balances affordable housing and green spaces. Tricorn House (above right) must be replaced: it is an ugly monster at the gateway to our Parish. Indeed there is much to be done. I care about this parish; I care about what happens here. I know that when you vote for me your vote will be a vote for this parish."
