Greens say GM Maize is not the answer to problems
Dairy farmers are getting even less for their milk despite prices for consumers rising. The supermarkets are fixing the prices and raking in more and more of the profit. Many farmers in the South West are now receiving at least a penny a litre less for milk than the cost of producing it. GM Fodder Maize(i) is now being promoted as a money-saver for farmers.
Carol Kambites, a Green Party candidate in this years European
elections, said; "It is nonsense to suggest GM Maize is the answer.
Tests show it has poor yields and even if this wasn't the case it would
not cut costs by more than one tenth of a penny per pint."
Carol Kambites, said; "The responsible way to help farmers is to reject
GM maize and make supermarkets pay farmers fair prices. I would urge
our local MPs to sign a motion(ii) that calls on the Government to
fully investigate what appears to be a monopoly of the milk market. We
urgently need to support our dairy farmers before it is too late."

EDM 548 PRICE OF MILK 04.02.04 Meale/Alan
"That this House expresses concern about the current balance between
the price paid for milk by consumers and that paid to its producers by
dairy companies; is further concerned about widespread allegations that
processors have created an effective monopoly of prices, supply and
demand, which has resulted in consumers and producers detrimentally
bearing the brunt of price initiatives; and calls upon the government
to investigate this as a matteror urgency, to ensure full confidence in
there being a fair and equitable distribution of prices, profits and
returns arising from these products."
