LIB DEM PARACHUTING IN PETER HIRST |
Like David Drew I raised an eyebrow when I heard that the local Liberal Democrats had parachuted in someone from Cheshire as their Stroud Parliamentary candidate (Gazette). Not, I hasten to add, have I anything against anyone who hails from near Manchester but rather that they seemingly overlooked good potential candidates who already reside in our community.
Local political history should have taught them that "outsiders" rarely do well in the first round and only start to build a portfolio when they make their mark either at District or County level. Their previous candidate, like Peter Hirst, was brought in about six months prior to the election and her vote dropped to 10.93%,5% lower than their 1997 result. During the 70's and early 80's the Labour Party fell into the same trap with the twisted logic that somehow, someone from outside must intrinsically be better. Of course the electorate see it in a very different light insofar as they feel that Stroud is just being used as the first stepping stone in a political career.
