IRAQ - WE HAVEN'T LEARNT FROM HISTORY Print E-mail

So no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. It is a shame we haven't learnt from history. In 1964 in Vietnam it was two attacks by North Vietnamese gunboats on U.S. destroyers that gave the Johnson government what it needed, to lead Congress into war. Only later was it revealed that a draft version of the resolution had been prepared prior to the alleged attacks; that one attack was a deliberate serious provocation by the U.S. while the other attack did not take place at all. By the time this was exposed, however, the US was already "committed" to a full-scale American-led war in Vietnam. Why didn't we listen to the Green Party and others who were telling us there were other ways than war?
