GLOUCESTER'S GREEN FUTURE |

Letter published in the Gloucester Citizen 4th February 2010
Dear Editor,
Gloucester’s Green Future
As a member of the Green Party, it is really encouraging to see how the City is forging ahead on green issues. The new recycling arrangements are just one example of this. There are others. Adverts for free and subsidised home insulation seem to be everywhere. Movies like the excellent ‘The Age of Stupid’ are being widely shown and discussed. Schools and colleges are getting the message. Whatever the arguments for and against the incinerator at Javelin Park (mostly against as far as the Green Party is concerned) at least people are taking notice. I am particularly excited by the Transition Gloucester initiative now just beginning to take shape. Transition is a town by town movement which encourages communities ‘to look at peak oil and climate change squarely in the eye and unleash the collective genius of their own people to find answers’ to quote the official website. With regard to party politics, we in the Green Party might be forgiven for a smile when we see how enthusiastically other political parties are joining the green agenda, but naturally we are pleased about this. It shows how much influence we are having! Of course there is a long way to go, and the situation regarding climate change remains very grave. But while there is life there is hope, and Gloucester seems very full of green life at the moment. Jonathan Ingleby
