NEW GREEN PARTY LOCAL GROUP FOR COTSWOLD? Print E-mail

Ciren9th June 2009

Following the very positive results in the Cirencester election there are now plans to form a local Green party group in Cirencester. See more information in the letter below that thanks voters.

I would like to thank all those who voted for me as Green Party candidate for Cirencester in the recent Gloucs County Council elections.I am delighted to have gained over 900 votes in Cirencester, way ahead of both Labour candidates. This shows that there is an appetite in the town for taking climate change and social justice seriously. It is still the Greens contention that the main parties haven't grasped the serious nature of what the scientists are telling us and of the need to act now. Now more than ever we need a Green New Deal to tackle the recession and lay the basis for an economic system that's fairer as well as sustainable for future generations.

Considering the level of support that this vote shows for the Green Party in Cirencester, I would like to ask anyone who is interested in forming a local Green Party in the town  or District to contest other elections to contact me with a view to an initial meeting.  I can be contacted by e-mail  at robert.irving@gmail.com or at my home address which is on the nomination forms

On a less happy note, I feel that the coverage of these elections, County Council and European, in the Standard was extremely poor with barely a page appearing in the paper and that just on the day of the election. I realize that MPs are deeply unpopular at the moment, but this is no excuse for such minimal coverage. II's not enough to post the candidates' details on a website.

Yours sincerely

Robert Irving
