elections-stroudgcc09 4th June 2009 updated 8th June 2009

Sarah Lunnon was elected as Green party County councillor for Stroud East.

Greens gain 19% of the vote share in the District: just ahead of Labour and a point behind Lib Dems - see more here.

Philip Booth commenting on the result said: "This is a magnificent result - and across Stroud District, Greens came in with shed loads of votes which could mean overall we have 19% of the votes across Stroud District. That puts us level-pegging with Lib Dems and more than a point ahead of Labour. We are long overdue electoral reform that would see all those voting Green represented in local Councils and Westminister. However Sarah's election is a signal that times are changing. Our results in the Nailsworth and Minch ward with our candidate Sophie Barton, were also great putting us in second place to the Tories there."

Here's how the Echo reported it: "In contrast, the Green Party was cock-a-hoop at winning its first ever seat on the county council. Spokesman for the county's Greens, Philip Booth, said: "We're thrilled. Now we have a Green voice in council, we hope we can get some proper attention to issues of social and environmental justice.""

Sarah Lunnon on the announcement of the results for Stroud East paid tribute to Brian Oosthuysen's hard work in the ward and then said in her acceptance speech: "In 1988 Margaret Thatcher in a speech to the Royal Society said that ‘global warming was one of the world’s most serious problems’. 21years later we still have local and national politicians who are quick to ridicule the Green environmental agenda and slow to address the ecological and economic challenges posed by climate change.

Sarah Lunnon, who is a district councillor and leader of the Green group said: "What matters now is what we can do together to meet these twin challenges before us. The environmental movement has been accused for too long of not understanding economics, yet it is now becoming ever more apparent that without a sustainable environment we can not have a stable economic system. As Nicholas Stern has pointed out the two issues are either side of the same coin."

Sarah Lunnon concluded: "As a County Councillor I will remind the administration that Climate Change is not optional, that we need action not rhetoric. The path followed through the 20th Century has come to an end and we require a more just, environmentally sustainable map to replace it."
