GREEN COMMENT ON £92M PFI MONEY WON BY GCC Print E-mail

Wastetruck15th November 2008

Cllr Sarah Lunnon attended the public waste meeting in Quedgeley with other Gloucestershire Green party members. Greens have been working with both the District and County Councils to ensure that sustainable solutions are found for our County's waste. News that the County has won £92m for a waste facility raises many issues. Cllr Martin Whiteside comments on three crucial aspects.

Cllr Martin Whiteside, Green Party Parliamentary Candidate for Stroud: "It is important that progress is made to end our reliance on landfill. Three factors are crucial: 1. The bidding process should favour smaller, more flexible, decentralised waste treatment - not a single large incinerator at Javelin Park; 2. We need more ambition about reducing the waste we produce in the first place; 3. A PFI is not the best way to get long term best value for the people of Gloucestershire as contracts are inflexible and cost the tax payer more in the long run."

Martin Whiteside added: "The County Council should run a proper public consultation exercise on this. It is hiding behind a 'the commercial bidders will decide' approach - this is not good enough.  We would like the people in Gloucestershire deciding as it is us and our children who will end up paying for it all."
