FUEL PRICES: WE CAN ALL HELP Print E-mail

realprogress758th July

Green party member Tony McNulty writes to local press on fuel prices and about the elections in May.

The situation over fuel prices should allow us the opportunity to reflect on the environmental impact all this transportation is having; global warming, increased need for roads (impact on flooding), reduction in future availability of fuels, increase in the cost of food and so on.

We can all do something to improve the situation and our reliance on the haulage industry by buying locally; from our excellent farmers markets, local furniture manufacturers, local clothes co-op's and so on.

Let us all go green and walk to the shops, walk the kids to school, and buy locally. It really is the only answer.

Following the recent District Council Elections, it is interesting how many of the various successful candidates have shown their green credentials. Ray Apperley said "we need to work together to make Stroud a healthier place to work and live" Keith Pearson wants to champion the "regeneration of urban areas" and Barbara Tait is "keen to protect the wonderful countryside and wildlife".

Given that the Greens came 2nd in the recent elections, I wonder how long it will be before these, and the rest of our community, give in to their true feelings and beliefs, and admit they are all Green At Heart? Perhaps then we will see real action against issues like the proposed incinerator at Stonehouse, and the improvement in social housing across the district.
