GREEN MOVE TO CUT COUNCILLORS CO2 EMISSIONS AND COSTS |

At the Full council meeting on 26th June Greens sought to cut car
allowances to councillors in a bid to save money and reduce CO2
emissions. They also sought an amendment to remove the cap on
Dependants Carers Allowance available to councillors who need to employ
help so that they can attend meetings.
Cllr Sarah Lunnon, Leader of the Green Group of Stroud District councillors, said: "I am disappointed that despite considerable support for the two Green party amendments, both were defeated by the Conservative administration. We are however delighted that they have not ruled them out completely and that Council voted to let the Independent Remuneration Panel consider these moves later in the year."
Sarah Lunnon said: "The measures we sought would have saved the Council money and not rewarded councillors who have larger sized cars. For councillors who travel most on council business it would prove an incentive to invest in more efficient vehicles. This measure would have also more than paid for removing the cap on Dependants Carers Allowance. Indeed it seems extraordinary there is a cap on supporting dependents so that councillors can attend meetings, yet no cap on the mileage councillors can claim. Such a measure would signal that we are serious about seeking wider representation in our communities."
