SNJ statement from the Green Party
The Green Party sees the local elections as an excellent chance to make further gains through people’s increasing support for the ideas of social and environmental justice.
The five Green councillors currently on Stroud District Council are highly respected for their achievements, which include working to protect local health services from privatisation and opposing the Government’s closure of Post Offices. They are also seeking changes in Council policy to save energy costs and tackle climate change. The Green Party wants our communities to flourish through the provision of a secure local infrastructure and the protection of vital services. We listen and work with communities to solve problems. We want to see efficient use of Council resources, improvements to recycling, and 20mph speed limits implemented to cut road casualties and make our streets safer and our towns more pleasant.
Greens also work hard to create an environment in which small businesses can thrive through the employment of local people and resources. We are pushing for 50% of all new housing developments to be truly affordable or social housing, and we say “No” to a huge waste incinerator in the District.
Sustainability is at the heart of all Green Party policy, and we will fight to ensure our world is preserved for future generations. We urgently need more Green voices on the Council to work to build a better Stroud District and a stronger future for everyone. Please consider voting Green - it will make a difference. Gerald Hartley's statement 11/04/2008
This statement was made to a local website and is copied here:
After many years of being a “greeny”, I am asking the voters of Eastington & Standish for the opportunity to represent them on the District Council and increase Green Party representation there.
After 20 years in Saul, where we had invested in solar panels & organic gardening, I moved, with my wife Sue, to Standish Lane in 2007, to take on the challenge of a house in poor repair. We are doing our best to renovate sympathetically, incorporating renewable energy, environmentally friendly materials, re-cycling and energy-efficient technologies. We welcome interested visitors.
I support the Standish campaign for further safety measures on the B4008 & I fully support KER in its opposition to Stroud RFC’s move from Rodborough. Neither community wants this and for good reasons.
My interests as a District Councillor would centre on:
· initiatives to improve waste reduction, re-use & processing to produce useable energy
· affordable housing schemes
· encouragement to developers & householders toward energy efficiency
· road safety issues
· staff relations
· supporting localisation where ever possible
I want to see changes that involve the community in deciding how our environment should evolve, our children be protected & nurtured, our artistic and sporting endeavours be encouraged, our elderly people valued & cared for and our local businesses supported to provide good products, services and employment.
I was born in Stonehouse, have been resident in Gloucestershire all my life & live in the ward, which I believe is important. I have worked in industry & local government & run my own business for 13 years, so have understanding of public, private and small business sector issues.
I hope that by the time of the election I will have delivered my leaflet to your address enabling you to read more about me personally & my views.
