ACTION NEEDED TO CALM TRAFFIC IN LANSDOWN, STROUD Print E-mail

Sarah-Lunnon10th September 2007

Cllr Sarah Lunnon, Leader of the Green party group of District councillors has been seeking solutions to the dangerous traffic in Lansdown Road.

The SNJ had a letter last week from Sarah Lunnon and The Citizen this week  quoted her when they reported that an eight-year-old boy had to throw himself against a wall to avoid being hit by a car which drove on the pavement on a busy Stroud street.

Residents have said for some time that their lives are being blighted by motorists speeding along the Lansdown, which is reduced to a single carriageway because of parked cars. Cars regularly drive on the pavement to pass each other.

Coun Sarah Lunnon, of Stroud District Council who helped organise a street party in the road last year to highlight concerns has also spoken out about dangerous driving on nearby Slad Road. She said: "Making Lansdown a one-way street for its entire length would speed traffic up, making it more dangerous. What's needed is a traffic management plan for Stroud, rather than a piecemeal approach."

Sarah Lunnon, who has had meetings with the County on this issue said: "All motorists when in Stroud should drive as if there is a five-year-old child in front of them on a bicycle. People just get into a mindset when they are driving that they are late and need to get somewhere and just stop seeing everybody else. To drive at an eight-year-old on a scooter is unforgivable."
