GLOUCESTER GREEN WASTE COMMENT Print E-mail

Wastetruck29th October 2007

Gloucester Green comments on plan to have fortnightly green waste collections extended.

Bryan Meloy, a Gloucester Green party spokesperson said: "A green waste strategy should be part of waste collection, but in many areas where Councils have collected waste this has led to a significant increase in waste being collected: this maybe good for Government targets but is not always the best for the environment. Priorities in waste collection must be to reduce waste in the first place then looking at recycling and kitchen waste collection schemes. There is lots more that can be done to promote waste reduction: car boots, charity shops, home and community composting, furniture recycling projects, real nappy schemes and getting supermarkets to cut back on their vast amount of packaging. It is positive that the Council are looking at solutions but there must be much greater urgency if we are to tackle climate change and avoid fines that could lead to significant Council tax rises."
