LETTER TO LGA CONDEMNING AVIATION EXPANSION PLANS |

22nd October 2007
A Green party letter to the Local Government Association newsletter challenging views that airport expansions are good for the economy.
Editor, The First,
The recent report by Cllr Keymer of his visit to the EU Committee of the Regions notes his recommendation to 'plan long term for the growth' of regional airports (6/10/07). This is deeply worrying.
Scientists expect the Arctic to be ice free in 23 years. They are adamant that "there is no chance for the climate without tackling aviation" - and that means stopping the expansion of airport infrastructure. We have to cut emissions by 90%, why are we even entertaining expansion by aviation? What other sector will need to cut emissions harder to 'pay' for this?
On top of that the International Energy Agency confirms we can expect unprecedented shortages of oil and massive price rises. We may already have reached 'Peak-oil': when demand outstrips new finds. By 2012 remaining oil reserves will fall dramatically and by 2025 we may have only half the oil we need.
It is economically, environmentally and morally wrong to be pursuing aviation expansion. We urgently need to take the road to a low carbon world if we are serious about saving this planet for future generations.
