17th October 2007
The Green Party today revealed the results of it's annual elections for
the party's Executive and Principal Speakers who act as the primary
spokespeople of the party.
Dr. Caroline Lucas, Green MEP for the South-East and the party's target candidate for Brighton Pavilion has been elected as female Principal Speaker while Dr. Derek Wall, who has been Principal Speaker for the past year, has been re-elected as male Principal Speaker.
Martin Whiteside, the Green party's Parliamentary candidate for Stroud said: "I welcome the election of Caroline and Derek who I know will both do an excellent job. Green politics more than ever is vital, it's the politics quite literally of survival, we live in a world where another way of living is necessary and green politics is about making it real. Just look at the climbing temperatures and the spread of global warfare, the US drive towards global imperialism supported by Brown, we Greens must renew our anti-war activism, Iraq must not be followed by the destruction of Iran."
Caroline Lucas said: "I am honoured to have been chosen to represent the Green Party as we continue to grow in support, membership, representation - and as we stand on the verge of electing our first MPs. While the three main Westminster parties fight amongst themselves for the soggy grey middle ground of British politics, the need has never been greater for a party to say proudly and unequivocally: We are a party of social justice and redistribution - we are not ashamed of our tax proposals to make the rich and the corporations pay their fair share. We are a party of human rights and civil libertes - championing the rights of asylum seekers and refuges at a time when the other parties are becoming ever more repressive. We are a party of real sustainability and environmental justice and we won't shy away from the difficult choices ahead. And that's the message I will be delivering tirelessly as Principal Speaker."
Derek Wall, who visited Gloucestershire earlier in the year, said: "I am both honoured and humbled to have been re- elected as Green Party Principal Speaker with such a decisive and increased vote. I am going to have another year of standing up for radical green politics, ecology, social justice, grassroots democracy and peace. My job is to trumpet the Green Party Manifesto for a Sustainable Society and I will do so with renewed energy and vigour."
