75 PEOPLE JOIN CAFE DISCUSSION ON CAPITALISM |

The most recent cafe discussion entitled: "Is Capitalism Sustainable?"
saw 75 people squeeze into the Star Anise Cafe in Stroud. Katy
Albiston, Politics Lecturer and former Stroud District councillor set
the scene, then views were put by Molly Scott-Cato, Green party
Economics spokesperson and Neil Carmichael, Conservative Parliamentary
candidate for Stroud.
Molly Scott Cato, who lives in Stroud, said: "As Gandhi said there is enough for everyone's need but not everyone's greed. Capitalism relies on inequality and those who take too much put extra pressures on the planet. Capitalism cannot survive without increased growth and consumption and this is already having a profound effect on our planet. We need to radically alter the current system: the market should be one institution among others that includes decentralised democratic ownership and control of assets rather than the market or state ownership."
Neil Carmichael argued that technological answers held out much hope and noted that we had an "enormous responsibility to turn capitalism into a useful tool" by for example using the tax system to help change practices.
Katy Albiston rounded up by noting her deep concerns about the current system leading us to disaster and in a throw-away comment called for "Anarchic communism".
