GLOS GREENS RETURN FROM CONFERENCE Print E-mail

Green Party Real Progress18th September 2007

Greens from the County have returned this week from their Autumn Conference in Liverpool where policies on climate change were updated and tightened.

Dr Carol Kambites, one of the Green party delegates from Stonehouse, said: "It was a very good conference but it is still deeply worrying that the other parties are still not delivering on climate change. With all their warm words you might even think it was all sorted, but no, the UK’s carbon dioxide emissions are still rising by more than 1% a year."

Carol Kambites said: "The other parties seem to want you to believe that reducing emissions means reducing your quality of life. Maybe their way it does, but they have got it the wrong. They think the status quo is the way things are meant to be; that this is as good as it gets.  We don’t agree. For the Green Party, tackling climate change means creating a fairer, happier, healthier, more enjoyable life.”

Green Party Principal Speaker Siân Berry, who went to school in Cheltenham but now lives in London, in her keynote address said: "Gordon Brown thinks you should solve climate change by changing your light bulbs. We think you should solve climate change by changing your government."

Bryan Meloy, Coordinator of the Gloucester Green party described the conference as somewhere a Green can immerse themselves in an environment where everyone believes we can take positive action to create a better world and life for everyone. He said: "Conference is where Greens collectively show leadership on social and environmental policy which other parties show great intent to follow but fail to take any decisive action. It is a place of empowerment where we see that all we believe in, really is possible: It only needs enough people to come with us."

Elinor Croxall. a Green party member from Painswick said: "Conference was as stimulating as ever, and shows that Greens are the only party dedicated to social and environmental justice. I joined discussions on policy ranging from updating climate change targets and biofuel policy to assisted suicide and government structure, demonstrating how radical and forward thinking the Green Party really is. I also attended discussions on the arms trade and their part in the 2011 census, legalising sex work, the injustice facing Palestinians and the need for monetary reform. It was a great opportunity to learn new things, listening to the views and experiences of others and share ideas to make the world a better place for people everywhere."

Elinor Croxall said: "Those who asked me before I went whether I 'had to take notes or could fall asleep in the corner' have clearly never been to Green Party conference. It is a stimulating and empowering experience, an arena to learn and contribute to important discussions and decisions and I can't wait for the next one. But in the mean time there is important campaigning work to be done!"
