LIB DEM LEAFLET IN GLOUCESTER A MISTAKE? |

30th April 2007
A Lib Dem leaflet sent out in Tredworth ward specifically appeals to Muslim voters. Cllr Philip Booth, as a spokesperson for Gloucestershire was asked to comment on BBC Radio Gloucestershire.
Philip Booth said: "I haven't seen the leaflet, but have no objections to a leaflet if it is not offensive. The leaflet apparently appeals to a specific section of the community - and that's his democratic right. In contrast the Greens seek to appeal to all voters - and have members and supporters of all faiths and none."
Philip Booth added: "Muslims in this country are increasingly under attack, often vilified as terrorist sympathizers at the very least, or actively in collaboration with terrorists at the worst. I, like many in the County are deeply concerned by the erosion of our civil liberties. It is shocking how the other main parties are not pushing this point - indeed Greens are also the only main party that opposed both the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. However this is a local election and should focus primarily on those issues."
Philip Booth said: "Communities need to have a greater understanding of each other - this leaflet as it's being presented in the news has the potential to create misunderstanding. That would be a shame as I am sure the Lib Dems do not have that intention. In the end, of course, the voters must judge and decide from leaflets and what they know about the candidates how they should vote."
