GREENS LEAD CAMPAIGN TO SAVE TREES IN LOWER STREET, STROUD Print E-mail
19th April 2007

John MarjoramThe Town Council is seeking to take on the ownership of a small area of greenspace that was facing the axe from Gloucestershire County Council. They originally bought the land for a road widening scheme that never took place and planned to cut two mature trees on the site and it appears sell the land to the highest bidder.

Green Deputy Mayor Cllr John Marjoram (pictured) took quick action and intervened to prevent the trees being cut. Over twenty people attended a local meeting and another 12 wrote letters to support the campaign to protect the site.  Some 30 plus people have now attended another meeting to protect the land.

John Marjoram said: "This has been a public area for at least 30 years and should continue to be so. I feel we are selling off another piece of the county silver, even though it may be a salt spoon! I have challenged the County in the way they are handling this matter, suggesting they put it on the open market with a fixed price."

Another meeting in the Town Council Offices will be on Sunday 22nd April at 7pm to see how the community can retain the plot.
