GREENS DISCUSS VEIL WEARING |
|

4th February 2007
On Friday 26th January over 40 people joined the monthly Green party sponsored cafe discussion
at Star Anise Cafe in Stroud - this month was on 'Image and Identity'
and included very powerful and deeply personal accounts from 3 muslim
women about their choice and experiences of wearing a veil or scarf.
For
many present it was their first time to ask a veiled woman challenging
questions about their choice. Many in the discussion groups felt they
had gained a much greater understanding and valued the evening
immensely.
Meredith Fisk, one of those attending the event reports:
"The
coffee house discussion evening kicked off with Jeff Coates, who talked
about the white poppies for peace. He spoke about how white
poppies challenge and offend some as they take it as an insult to those
who’ve died in war. Jeff explained how the white poppy is a way to
demonstrate one’s believe that it is an 'absurdity to fight a war'.
"Mumtaz Kadadia was the next to speak. She was talking about her muslim
belief and her decision to wear a veil. She told us how she
gradually moved towards wearing the veil, at first covering her hair,
going on to wearing a loose gown, then finally wearing the veil which
she has done for the last 8 years. Mumtaz explained that she did this
to “do what I can to please her lord”. She spoke about how some
people sometimes shouted insults at her in the street and others
accepted her. Explaining “if people see past the veil we’re just the
same”. Her cousin then spoke, saying that she saw Mumtaz get
stronger with the wearing of the veil and how when she herself started
wearing the veil she felt accepted and no-one made her feel different
about wearing it.
"Helen Williams who lives in Stroud was the final speaker. She
converted to Islam 3 years ago after 30 years of study and although
chooses to wear the head scarf does not wear a veil. This was then
followed by some lively discussion, delicious cakes and coffee from the
Anise Star Café. It was a very enjoyable evening and the next one
is one the 23rd February, titled 'What is Real Education?'."
