STAVERTON: JOURNALISTS AND COUNCILLORS NEED TO WAKE UP TO CLIMATE CHANGE Print E-mail

3rd December 2006

GlaciermeltIn March the Citizen led front page of their business section about Staverton airport. Again it makes front page: "Row grows over future of airport" (28/11/06). Astonishingly in both cases these articles fail to mention climate change.

Surely there should be no bigger row than the fact that councillors at Gloucester City and Cheltenham Borough Councils are supporting the airport? Such airport improvements serve the rich, but the people who are being hit first and will be hit hardest by climate change are among the poorest on earth.

The Stern report gave us a stern warning but it seems to have gone unheeded by councillors and reporters alike. Councillors need to wake up to the fact that we cannot have 'business as normal' and climate change should be in your paper every day. It should not be left to Greens to ensure this issue gets the space it needs.

Many of our most senior scientists say we must act now. It is time we took their advice.
