GOOD FOOD, GOOD DISCUSSION IN STROUD |
|
|
Cllr
Martin Whiteside, an organiser of the Coffee House Discussions, said:
"This month’s ‘Conversation Café’ covered the fascinating subject of
food and we learnt what an amazing variety of innovative food projects
are taking place in Stroud."
Martin Whiteside continued: "Jade Bashford set the context of how our
decisions about how we buy and what we eat can be life or death for
other parts of the World. Nick Weir explained the exciting success and
expansion of Stroud Community Agriculture. Liz Godsell told how their
farm, faced by plummeting milk prices, had diversified into making
cheese and how important the Farmers Market was in helping them make
the transition. Greg Pilley explained how the challenges of setting up
a local brewery was rewarded by winning the CAMRA champion beer of
Gloucestershire in 2006. Nickolas Allen, our host at Star Anise
Café, told of his passion for food and how we need to reconnect with
what we eat. Finally Nicky Ferguson explained the practicalities
of setting up a food co-op."
Martin Whiteside said: "The wide-ranging discussion that followed was
lubricated by some of Greg’s wonderful beer (orders
greg@stroudbrewery.co.uk) – we all agreed on the importance of trying
to buy local or fairtrade, to value the food we eat and the time we
spend cooking and eating with friends and family."
There will be no Coffee House Discussion in December. The next one will
be on Friday 26th January from 7.30 to 9.30 at Star Anise Cafe in
Stroud. The title is: "Image and Identity. Freedom to wear the veil,
freedom not to wear the veil? Wearing religious or political symbols?
Are dress codes oppressive?"
