envpaper Stroud District Green party, along with others, challenged Stroud District Council two months ago to move beyond good intentions and to include tough targets and real actions in their Environment Green Paper (i).

Plus read more about Martin Whiteside successfully proposing an amendment calling for the Council to look into ethical investment for their finances by clicking here.

Martin Whiteside, Parliamentary spokesperson for Stroud District Green party, said: "We applaud the Council for now listening to the likes of Economist Nicholas Stern and those of us who have campaigned on these issues for years. Every Green vote and every Green voice on the Council have encouraged the other parties and the Council to take these issues seriously. The local medias' interest is a great opportunity to raise awareness amongst the whole community of the most important issue of our time."

Martin Whiteside, a Stroud District councillor said: "The Green party recognise this Environment Green paper as a genuine attempt to tackle issues that have been sidelined for too long. Now all parties will need to work together to improve the draft strategy if we are to build a strong economic and just future for ourselves and future generations."

The Green party's submission to the consultation was released yesterday (available on their website) and sets out 8 key goals around issues like waste, energy use, transport, water and the economy with one overaching goal that calls for an annual reduction of at least 3% in greenhouse gas emissions by the Council, households and businesses within the District (ii).

Martin Whiteside, who wrote the Green party's submission with help from a number of local experts, said: "There is a danger of making a few token changes in 'easy' areas but not really getting to grips with the problem. Greens will be continuing to encourage, push and support Stroud District Council to try to ensure that Stroud District is a leader in environmentally friendly, high quality living."
