LONDON RALLY AGAINST HOT AIR Print E-mail

23rd October 2006 updated 4th November 2006

30,000 people in London

54 seater coach full from Stroud plus others on train  - plus coaches from Lydney, Cheltenham and Gloucester.

John Marjoram, who organised a coach from Stroud, said: "It was a wonderful coalition of different groups with a sea of Green party banners - other parties still haven't woken up to the urgency of it all, but hopefully with Stern report and this march they will be pushed into taking the actions that are needed."

There was also a demonstration in Stroud by those unable to attend the march in London.

SOME PLACES LEFT for places on coaches to this year's Climate March on Saturday 4th November in London. Coaches going from Stroud, Cheltenham, Cirencester and Lydney. Make your voice heard - also if you are in Stroud District I would urge all to use the recently announced consultation to urge that the Environment Green paper takes the bold, radical and wholly necessary steps that are needed to tackle greenhouse gas emissions.  Read comment re Stern report

The march is supported by a coalition of groups including Campaign against Climate Change, Oxfam, Christian Aid, WWF, FoE, Greenpeace and the Green party.

Will Stephens, a Nailsworth-based Green party member organising the Stroud District Green party coach said: "We must show the Government that they can not continue to get away with placing economic growth before the welfare of people and planet - the Stop Cimate Chaos Coalition are calling on the Government to committ to 3% carbon dioxide emissions per annum from now on. If this is not put into place the scale of future emissions reductions will have to be much more drastic putting a more serious restraint on our way of life."

The coach is £10 per head and will pick up from Nailsworth and Stroud. To book a place call John Marjoram on 01453 750962 or email Will Stephens on will@resurgence.org . There is also a coach organised from Cheltenham and Cirencester (Details on www.icount.org.uk) and one from Lydney (Phone Robin - 01594 529058).

Stroud Demo - same day

Clare Sheridan is organising an event in the High Street on the same day. 11am outside "Millets" for those unable to make the London trip.

Martin Whiteside, the Green Party's Parliamentary candidate for Stroud, said: "Having hope for the future of our children must be based on taking firm action against climate change. There are still no taxes on aircraft or marine fuel! We need the demonstration on 4th November in London to be the biggest of its kind ever held in the UK, because the politicians have only written speeches about climate change, not yet made policies to put a stop to it."

Notes:

DEMONSTRATION DETAILS: Start time: 11.30am at the US Embassy  Grosvenor Square, with march to Trafalgar Square later. Grosvenor Square is equidistant from Marble Arch and Bond Street (Central Line) and not far from Green Park tube station as an alternative.
