CURB MOBILE USE IN COUNTY SCHOOLS |

27th September 2006
Teachers
call for a ban on mobile phone use in Gloucestershire schools is most
welcomed (Citizen 26/09/06). While they are arguing on grounds that
they interrupt lessons, distract pupils and could be used to cheat, the
Green party has further concerns.
21 months ago we wrote to Gloucestershire County Council
calling for action, following Professor William Stewart of the National
Radiological Protection Board (NRPB), urging that mobile phones should
not be given to children under the age of 8 and that such phones should
be severely reduced amongst 8-14 year olds. More research is needed but
the the accumulated evidence suggests that electromagnetic radiation is
more likely to harm the young as their skulls are thinner.
There are also other growing concerns regarding these mobiles. A European consultation
launched this summer will hopefully lead to EU legislation to help
protect children from stalkers, bullies and dangerous internet
material. Advertising also needs consideration: ringtones, which are
targeted almost exclusively at children, generated about £342m in
European sales last year.
Mobile phones also offer many benefits, but clearly we need to tackle
these other issues. We urge again that the County introduce a policy
for schools, after consultation with parents, teachers and the NRPB,
which would limit mobile phone use during school.
