JOBS NOT SAVED Print E-mail

"900 CITY JOBS SAVED FROM AXE" proclaimed The Citizen front page (1/10/03). Yet the rescue package for nuclear-energy giant BE goes against all commonsense.

It is so simple. Nuclear power = expensive electricity + more cancer + environmental danger + terrorist threat + less jobs.

By contrast the Green Partys' policies of Renewable Energy from sun, sea, earth and air = safe, clean, green energy + protecting the public from climate change + more jobs.

Instead of pouring taxpayers money into this failed nuclear operator, the government should let BE go into administration and carefully close their plants. Britain's nuclear expertise can be invested in the multi-billion-pound market worldwide for nuclear decommissioning, clean-up and waste management.

The rescue package for BE, may still be ruled by the EU, as unfair aid to a failing company. Let's hope that soon this nuclear power dinosaur is put out of its misery and we can seriously start a Green energy revolution.

Philip Booth, Gloucestershire Green Party.
