CAPEL MILL AND BRIMSCOMBE PORT: GETTING THE CANAL RIGHT Print E-mail

25th August 2006

Martin2006.jpgThank you for raising the important issue of the potential impact of canal restoration on the wildlife haven of Capel Mill (SNJ 23 August).  It is important that the restoration maintains the beauty and biodiversity of this stretch.  However I think you misrepresent my views – I said that any plans or alternative options should have an independent environmental assessment – so we can judge what is the best solution.  It is not just a matter of following the original draft plan or choosing the cheapest option.

The issue of choosing the best option at Capel Mill has similarities with critical ‘hot-spots’ elsewhere – most notably Brimscombe Port.  Here the Parish Council and wider community supported canal restoration on condition that the plans would be good for the local community and for local wildlife. The Parish Council even produced its own plans detailing the type of regeneration it would like to see. This community support was crucial in getting the funding that has enabled the restoration to take place.  Now we are determined that the detailed proposals will indeed be acceptable to the local community and to wildlife.  We are looking forward to the New Brimscombe Port being a vibrant heart to the community that we can all enjoy and be proud of.
