Six Myths of Lords Reform |
|
|
The Elect the Lords campaign have identified six myths that they believe are unnecessarily confusing the public debate over House of Lords reform.
These are arguments employed by opponents of House of Lords reform which are presented as fact despite having no factual basis. The six myths identified are:
• The House of Lords is more "independent" than the House of Commons because it is appointed;
• Elections would give party leaders more control over the second chamber;
• Electoral systems are "majoritarian";
• There is no "consensus" on Lords reform;
• Electing the second chamber would challenge the primacy of the Commons;
• The House of Lords is institutionally biased against Labour governments.
Commenting, National Co-ordinator of the Elect the Lords Campaign Peter
Facey said: "It is absurd that political patronage forms such a central
part of the British constitution in the 21st century, and many of the
arguments employed to defend it are equally absurd."
