Gloucester Green Party District Elections Statement Print E-mail

Gloucester is entering a crucial time in its long history. Large scale developments are planned throughout the city centre and docks area. The nature of these developments will set the scene for Gloucester’s foreseeable future.

Though sustainability is a key word in the mission statement of the GHURC responsible for these developments, nothing has been said of how this aim will be achieved. Green councillors will address this. We need a city built to work beyond the life span of world oil reserves which are already on the decline, a city which will be the envy of our nation and the world beyond.

As Greens we support the development of Community Gardens in the city. We would like to see unused allotments in the city developed as a resource for our communities. These valuable green spaces need to be protected from the frenzy of development in Gloucester. Please call us on 0845 456 2602 if you are interested in this idea.

Though some progress has been made by dedicated staff, Gloucester still has one of the worst records for recycling in the UK. Greens will address this. As tax payers we need to be aware that recycling, in addition to reducing waste, is also cheaper than other options such as incinerators and their associated pollution. Greens will oppose any moves towards building incinerators in Gloucestershire.

Greens will promote the expansion of local products and make Gloucester the hub of a vital economic resurgence for the county. We will achieve this if we have Green councillors working together with surrounding local authorities, farmers, city and rural communities.

The council must be responsible to the public for any actions it takes. Over the last couple of years some scandalous secret deals between councils and big business have come to light. No Green will ever support such behaviour and we will do all in our power to ensure Gloucester citizens are aware of any attempt to conduct council business in secret.

We are facing irreversible climate change. Already the ice caps are melting. A vote for the Green Party’s sustainable policies is a vote for your children’s future.

6 Reasons to Vote Green in Gloucester - Bryan Meloy

1) Developing Gloucester
There are huge developments planned for Gloucester. We need Green councillors to ensure these developments are ones in which we can all be proud and will meet the challenges of the 21st Century - that includes ensuring these developments take account of climate change and the forecast energy deficits.

2) Improving our railways
New stations are needed and more services at times for people to get to and from work and home. Building a station in the middle of green fields to which people drive to is a second rate option that does not look to the future.

3) Listening and acting
In spite of almost unanimous criticism in surveys and the Citizen letters page there is still a pretence that a Gloucestershire Parkway Station at Elmbridge Court is popularly supported by the public. It isn't and the Green Party have taken note of these views, we listen.

4) Reducing road dangers
We need more 20 mph zones to reduce casualties and traffic calming measures without humps. The latest Local Transport Plan talks about safer cycling in its introduction and then goes on to include no measures to achieve even a start to this. A Green presence would achieve safer streets.

5) Community Enterprise works
As more Out of town shops are built, more and more city shops are closing. Experience shows local control, local businesses and community enterprise deliver better value, better pay and better services as well as keeping money in the local economy. Green Councillors will do all they can to ensure that the needs of local businesses and communities are prioritised.

6) People count
Everyone knows of the Green Party commitment to tackling global warming. We could not hope to achieve this without a whole raft of policies to not only make this possible, but also maintain the standard of living most enjoy and tackle poverty, homelessness, crime and more.
