Labour elected nationally with 67 seat majority yet only 21% vote for them
Martin Whiteside (pictured at results left), the Green parliamentary candidate in Stroud, increased the Green Vote by 59%, gained over 5% of the vote and kept their deposit for the first time.

Commenting on the result Martin Whiteside said: "I wish to congratulate David Drew on winning this election, but this is a sad day for British democracy when Labour romp home with a significant 66 seat majority with the support of only 21% of the total electorate; a record low for a winning party and 159 more seats than the Tories who only polled 3% less than Labour!"

Stephen Tweedie, who has lived in Newent for over 15 years will be standing in the Forest of Dean for the Green Party.
Stephen Tweedie teaches at a local school and is a parent governor at the Newent Community School. Stephen Tweedie has become increasingly concerned about the government's lack of action on key issues. He said: "The other parties are carrying on as if it is business as usual. Tony Blair doesn't even mention climate change in his 6 pledges then votes to actually increase the carbon emissions allowed for industry." |

Britain needs real change now
Keith Bessant, who stood as the Green Parties candidate in the last General Election, is hoping to significantly improve his vote. He said: "People are disillusioned with the three main parties. Britain needs real change now on the pressing issues that face our society such as climate change and the power of big business. Other parties fail to challenge the way our society is run for a minority, thus leading to an apathetic and disempowered electorate. We need a politics and economics that puts people first and delivers real quality of life."
